The food and service at BYWOM is always great! They use local ingredients whenever possible, which is a major plus. I have had the trout entree several times and it is always perfection. The bywom burger is hands down the best burger in Big Sky. It is kind of like their take on a "big mac"...except they use local fresh ingredients. Plus they have great happy hour deals! BYWOM is a "must" if you are in Big Sky!

Absolutely the best food I and the rest of my family have every eaten. Everything we ordered had so much flavor and it was all fresh. Ya, maybe a little pricey, but everything in Big Sky is pricey. Ya, maybe the service could have been faster, but when you get food like this, it is worth the wait. Highly recommended.

When the food takes over an hour to arrive, it really doesn't matter what it tastes like anymore. I think it was pretty good, but I would have eaten their garbage at that point, I was so hungry. In fact, I dialed up some pictures of steak on my iPhone and passed it around the table. We all took turns sticking the iPhone in our mouth to simulate the feeling of eating. And you know what, I can actually understand the food taking so long to arrive in some cases. We were a party of eight and I'm sure the cooking staff was trying to arrange it so everything came out at the same time. But when you think it's going to take that long, LET SOMEONE KNOW. That way we can order more appetizers to hold us over. And the coup de grace? After finally serving plates to three of us, they swooped back in, TOOK THE PLATES AWAY, and gave them to another table. Oops!

Decided to try this place after getting turned away at the Lotus Pad across the street. Good food, albeit a bit pricy. Entrees $20 to $30 with $10 pub food and appetizers. Strange paintings were a bit creepy. Farm to fork when convenient and seasons allow (not often). The ice in the drinks was locally grown atleast. Recommend reservations on a saturday.

We had a party of five on a Tuesday night, the first night of a guys ski trip to Big Sky. There were a fair number of diners since it was "sushi Tuesday" but we had no problem getting a table in the back dining area. The cook/owner's wife waited on us and we had great service. Cocktails and wine by the glass got us started. Then we had a sushi plate as shared appetizers and a few guys ordered the onion soup. Overall the food was very good with fresh ingredients and a nice presentation. The meatball appetizers were a huge hit. The meat eaters loved their steaks. The trout was cooked perfectly. It appears a lot of locals and second homeowners go to this place. It has a very friendly, family-owned and casual vibe. (The restaurant is next to a nice beer pub with pool tables.) Prices are very reasonable for food and wine. They do catering. We booked the owner to cater a meal at our house and he did a great four course meal for a very, very reasonable price. And he did all the prep, cooking, cleaning and serving. Highly recommended.

Don't come here hungry. Brought family of four. Took over an hour to get entrees on friday night. Fondue appetizer very good. Scallops ok, not really blackened as stated. Paparelle very good. Cod ok. No matter how good, just took too long. Very noisy. Expensive for montana.

It was nice, casual without being pretentious. About the same price as other restaurants in the area. Service was good, our waitress was attentive. The food came out at a good pace, entree right after the salads, etc. the food was good, I had the rib eye special, a friend had the Asian noodles both were good. The waitress was good at getting a second drink order, deserts. The crowd was younger, a hip group. Enjoyed our dinner, I would go back.

"by word of mouth" is a nice little secret down in the Meadow Village at Big Sky. Sometimes, when I walk into a business I get an immediate impression; a feeling. For word-of-mouth, I could sense the passion - passion for food and wine. When we walked in the door, we were met by an eager and friendly hostess... and the kitchen staff. The kitchen is "open" and you can see the whole operation. Our server, although young was very knowledgeable and provided outstanding service. Tuesdays are "Sushi Tuesday" - the only day you can get Sushi in town of Big Sky. It was darn good sushi for a non-sushi restaurant. We tried all of the maki sushi. Good cuts and quality fish. The yellow tail (hamachi) was especially good. The salmon (sake) was a deep shade of red and might have been from the Pacific Northwest or Alaska. It was a nice change from the salmon that I normally find. We had a couple rolls (spider and spicy tuna), too. The rolls we good, but not spectacular. I browsed the regular menu and it looked delicious. Although, I cannot recall any specific dishes, I do remember that I thought it would be worth a return trip. The wine list was outstanding. They offered several different kinds of cold sake. We tried three different kinds by the glass. Each were delicious, but I can't remember the names. For desert, I had the creme burlee and my guest had the fresh homemade peach ice cream. Both were outstanding. The restaurant does not offer very impressive atmosphere. The decorating might have been done at Ikea. The chairs were not very comfortable. Depending the time of day and where you sit, you can get some serious glare from the sun. The bathrooms could stand a little upgrade. The atmosphere only reason I don't rate it a 5 star. It would be a 5 if these were a little nicer. But, don't let this get in your way. If you are in Big Sky, you won't go wrong having dinner here. I say spread the word.

Very unfortunate meal. My family travels extensively, we love eating out together and are happy to pay for decent meals. This was NOT a decent meal. I ordered the burger which turned out to be two frozen patties, reheated. Tasted like a burnt shoe with a bacterial infection. Side of coleslaw was surprisingly decent. Fries were burnt. How can you get fries wrong!?? Husband order baked rosemary chicken wings. The result of which, was clearly not baked it was a congealed soggy mess of wings, served in essentially a bone broth soup. The wings were soft, and white, something Hannibal Lector would be proud of. Not how you'd expect wings to be served, particularly when advertised as "oven baked". Kids ordered pasta- over cooked to the point of glue. I honestly don't understand how the meal turned out so wrong! It was so bad it was laughable, except I had to pay for for the laugh. I wonder if some sort of replacement chef was on who had been hired in the basis of microwave skills, rather than real cooking ability at all. I'm shocked this restaurant has so many many stars attributed to it. In fact one star is generous. I had such high hopes for this restaurant because of the reviews, but it was extremely bad. I think what annoyed me the most is that it is advertised (and priced) as a bit more of a higher end choice in town. If I had paid a fiver for this meal, maybe I'd feel differently. McDonalds does a better burger. Please save you dollars and go elsewhere. My only revenge is that I am using their wifi to post this review. Muahahaha....

Food was decent, if a bit overpriced (even for the type of fare). We had the calamari appetizer which had no inherent flavor, only the sauce added anything. My wife had the duck, which was slightly overcooked, but had good seasoning. I had the flat-iron steak, which was supposed to be medium rare, but was most decidedly rare. The garlic fries were just fries. I didn't taste the garlic - not that I'd really complain about that. The service was good, if a bit impersonal and officious. But for a $100+ meal, you can do better than this.

If you go (and I recommend it highly) have the chopped lamb steak. It was beyond fantastic! I stopped from finishing it so I could bring some home and have it for breakfast. My husband's duck was okay but he didn't save any for breakfast!

Service and wait staff was good-- no issues. The issue was that the food was just so-so and rather bland. Had to request hot sauce just to give the food some flavor. Considering that the average entree is $25, the cost didn't come close to the quality of the food.

my trip to the general public is... never eat at this restaurant. my $20 chicken Caesar salad had the driest chicken I've ever eaten in my entire life & the Caesar dressing taste like it came off the back of a Sysco truck! most of their food is microwaved and reheated... don't fall for the fancy decor and fancy wine glasses, I can make better food than this in my own kitchen and I'm not a chef!

By Word of Mouth Bistro + Catering is a great place for a casual and relaxed dinner. Their seasonal fare features locally raised, sustainable meats and produce made from scratch in their kitchen. Great Plains Bison T-Bone grilled to a perfect rare, topped with an herbed butter, and served with sautéed spinach and roasted tri-colored potatoes. The herbed butter accentuates the sweet flavor from the bison meat which is so tender. The sautéed spinach and tri-colored potatoes are the perfect sides adding a green and lightly starchy parts to the meal. End your meal with a Molten Chocolate Lava Cake topped with espresso ice cream!
